What should I ask a gutter installation contractor before hiring?

Before hiring a gutter installation contractor, verify their license and insurance, get at least 3 written itemized bids, confirm they will pull all required permits in their name, review the contract for a milestone-based payment schedule, and ask project-specific questions about materials and installation method. Never pay more than 30% upfront.

How many contractor quotes should I get?

You should get at least 3 written, itemized quotes before hiring a contractor. This gives you enough comparison points to identify a fair price range and spot any outliers. Always ask for the same scope of work across all bids so you're comparing apples to apples.

What is a red flag when hiring a contractor?

Major red flags include: asking for more than 30% upfront, asking you to pull permits in your name instead of theirs, no physical address or license number, pressure to sign immediately, no written contract, and quotes that are dramatically lower than all others (often a sign of cut corners or hidden costs).

Gutter-Specific Checklist

0/5

Confirmed whether the quote is for seamless (formed on-site) or sectional gutters — pricing and durability differ significantly

Verified gutter size (5" vs. 6") matches your roof area — larger roofs need 6" gutters or more downspouts to keep up with heavy rain

Confirmed downspout count and placement direct water at least 5–10 feet from the foundation

Checked that fascia boards were inspected for rot before installation — hangers won't hold in soft wood

Asked whether gutter guards or leaf screens are included or quoted separately

Verify Credentials

0/6

Confirm the contractor holds a valid state license for this type of work

Verify general liability insurance (minimum $1M coverage — ask for a certificate)

Confirm workers' compensation insurance is in place for their crew

Check Better Business Bureau rating and any complaint history

Read at least 5–10 recent Google or Yelp reviews from the past year

Verify they have a physical business address (not just a P.O. box)
