What We Do
BuildCost is a free construction cost estimator that helps homeowners understand what a project will cost before they talk to a contractor. We cover 10 of the most common home improvement projects — from wood decks and concrete patios to kitchen remodels and roof replacements — with local pricing data for all 50 states.
Our estimates are based on regional labor and material cost data aggregated from contractor bids across the United States. We break costs down by economy, standard, and premium tiers so you can set a realistic budget and negotiate from a position of knowledge.
Why We Built This
Most homeowners go into contractor conversations without any idea what a fair price looks like. That information asymmetry costs people money. BuildCost exists to close that gap — giving anyone free access to the same ballpark numbers that experienced contractors and real estate investors use every day.
What makes us different
A lot of “free estimator” sites exist to collect your phone number and sell it to contractors. That’s not what this is.

You see the full cost breakdown before we ask you anything. No form wall, no signup, no account.
We don't sell your information
If you choose to request contractor quotes, your contact info is used only for that purpose. It is never sold to advertisers, lead brokers, or third-party data companies.
We show our work
Every estimate includes a labor vs. materials breakdown and a plain-English explanation of how the numbers are calculated. You can verify the methodology yourself.
We built this to be useful, not to generate leads
BuildCost was built by a homeowner who got tired of vague estimates and paywalled cost guides. The calculator is free and always will be.
How Our Estimates Work
Costs are broken down by US region (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West) and adjusted for local labor market conditions. Every estimate includes a labor vs. materials breakdown. Figures are updated periodically to reflect current material prices and labor rates.
All estimates are for planning and budgeting purposes only. Actual project costs depend on site-specific conditions, contractor availability, and current market pricing. Always get quotes from at least three licensed local contractors before committing to a project.
