How many tiles do I need for a 60 sq ft bathroom floor?▾
For 12" tiles (1 sq ft each) you need 60 tiles plus 10% waste = 66 tiles. For 6" tiles (0.25 sq ft) you need 240 plus waste = 264 tiles. Order 15–20% extra for diagonal patterns or rooms with many cuts.
How much grout and thin-set do I need?▾
For 100 sq ft of standard 12" floor tile with 1/8" grout joints, expect about 1 bag (25 lb) of grout and 1 bag (50 lb) of thin-set mortar. Smaller tiles, wider joints, and irregular patterns increase both.
Sanded vs. unsanded grout — which do I need?▾
Use unsanded grout for joints under 1/8" wide (typical wall tile, glass mosaic, polished marble). Use sanded grout for joints 1/8" and wider (most floor tile). The sand prevents shrinkage cracks in wider joints.
Can I tile over existing tile or vinyl?▾
Yes, but the substrate must be flat, solid, and properly prepped. Roughen the old surface, use an appropriate bonding primer or modified thin-set, and confirm the floor structure can handle the added weight. For best results, remove old material and start with cement backer board.
